Crystal Care & Cleansing: The Complete Guide

Crystal Care & Cleansing: The Complete Guide

Crystals are natural objects, and a little care keeps them beautiful and energetically fresh for years. This guide covers the practical side (cleaning and protecting your stones) and the energetic side (cleansing and charging) — plus the safety rules that stop you from accidentally ruining a piece.

Why cleanse your crystals?

Many people like to cleanse a crystal when it first arrives and periodically after use — the idea is to clear absorbed energy and reset the stone’s intention. Whether or not you work energetically, regular care also keeps crystals looking their best.

Energetic cleansing methods

  • Smoke: Pass the stone through incense or herb smoke (sage, palo santo).
  • Sound: A singing bowl or bell — safe for every crystal.
  • Selenite or clusters: Rest smaller stones on a selenite plate or an amethyst/quartz cluster overnight.
  • Moonlight: Leave out under the full moon — gentle and safe for all crystals.
  • Water: Effective — but only for water-safe stones (see the warning below).

⚠️ Important: which crystals should NOT get wet

Water can damage soft or fibrous minerals. As a rule, avoid water with stones ending in “-ite” and these in particular:

  • Selenite (dissolves/flakes), Malachite, Pyrite (rusts), Hematite (rusts), Lepidolite, Angelite, Halite, Calcite, Fluorite, Kyanite.
  • Salt water is harsher than fresh — when in doubt, skip water entirely and use smoke, sound or moonlight.

Charging your crystals

Charging is about restoring a stone’s vibrancy. Common methods: moonlight (universally safe), brief morning sunlight (avoid for fade-prone stones — see below), burying in earth, or placing on a cluster. Many people charge under the full moon and set an intention as they do.

Crystals that fade in sunlight

Prolonged direct sun can bleach colour from Amethyst, Rose Quartz, Citrine, Fluorite, Celestite and Kunzite. Keep these out of sunny windowsills and charge them by moonlight instead.

Setting an intention

After cleansing, hold the crystal, take a breath, and state a simple intention (“calm,” “focus,” “protection”). This personalises the stone for how you want to use it — ideal for your meditation or chakra-healing practice.

Everyday physical care

  • Dust spheres and towers with a soft, dry cloth.
  • Store fragile clusters and points where they won’t knock together or chip.
  • Keep fade-prone stones out of direct sun.
  • Handle druzy and raw specimens gently — the tiny crystals can snag.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I cleanse my crystals?

When they arrive, and whenever they feel “heavy” or after intensive use. There’s no strict rule — monthly (e.g. at the full moon) is a popular rhythm.

Can I cleanse every crystal in water?

No — see the list above. When unsure, choose a no-water method like smoke, sound or moonlight.

Do self-cleansing crystals exist?

Selenite and clear quartz are often described as self-cleansing and are also used to cleanse other stones.
